A fistula refers to an abnormal tissue connection forming between two separate organs, or between an organ and the skin. When damaged tissues come into contact with one another during an infection, they can sometimes become diseased, and the subsequent tissue repair process can inadvertently result in the formation of a fistula. When diverticulitis is associated with an underlying infection, this infection can spread beyond the colon itself, potentially infecting nearby tissues, most commonly the bladder, small intestine, or skin. The most common type of fistula occurs between the bladder and the colon. This particular type of fistula affects men considerably more often than women and can potentially progress into a serious, long-lasting urinary tract infection.
